MoD Culloden Cantle - bag attachment points question

    Ladies/Gents/Rabble,

I not too long ago procured a MkII MoD cantle off Ye Olde Ebay, and am well pleased with it. I have a dilemma however - the hardware to attach the bag to the cantle (the spring-loaded "washer" plates) was not included. Not the seller's fault, it was advertised as-is and the pictures clearly showed the bare studs. I considered it fair for the price I paid, and moved on.

I am now getting around to making the bag to fit it, and I need a method to securely affix the bag to the cantle, and remove it easily when needed. I have searched the forum, and the internet at large, but not much comes up. I would prefer originals or replicas of the actual attachment mechanisms, but if there's a known substitute or work-around, I'd take that if the former can't be had.

    Thanks!

    -Caleb

Try your local fabric or craft stores, I found them at one shop that specializes in leather sewing supplies. Another option are military surplus or outdoor stores.

MacCathmhaoil, thanks for the reply; however, there is a specific fastening system this cantle uses that is the reason for my query. One can not use standard sewing techniques without drilling holes into the cantle. I'd like to use the existing mounting hardware if at all possible. ;)

!8 mm metal snap fasteners are the items used by most persons who are replacing bags on the MoD culloden style cantles. They are sold as 2 on a card at places such as JoAnnes in the USA.

    Cheers

I realize the mounting hardware on these is a particular type, I've had one since 1974. As I said they are available at leather and fabric sewing shops.

MacCathmhaoil, My apologies - I somehow misread what you posted into using leather sewing materials to attach the cantle, which was not at all what you said. Between your and Downunder's assistance, I have precisely what I need. Thank you, and again, my apologies.

The cool thing is that you can switch out different bags, as long as the bags are made with the female sides of the snaps sewn into them.

Here's one with the original bag open so that you can see how the female sides of the snaps are secured in the leather

My cantle came without snaps as well. The bag simply has holes punched in it that are stretched to pop over the studs.

Im getting ready to make a new bag, and I plan to take the studs out, and drill holes in between where each stud was press fit into the cantle, and then use leather lace to attach bag to cantle.

The finished product will look a bit like this, attachment wise:

Yes that's the traditional way, as I understand.

With the MOD "Culloden" cantle one would have to cut off the studs, and then drill the holes, correct?

I myself like the idea of being able to switch out bags, though obviously snap closures are anachronistic to the cantle design.
