My First DIY Full Mask Sporran

I had been wanting to make a full mask sporran for some time now, and decided that my first one shouldn't be too striking, yet unique and cost effective. With my daughter in mind, I chose to use a Very Fine grade specimen of Ursus Theodorus. With some careful cutting and sewing, a little elastic, a couple of rings and a magnetic clasp, it came together quite nicely.

My wife likes it so much she wants a full collection for herself and is already planning some different possibilities.

This is what happens when you wake up way too early on a Saturday, have very little to do, and see a fat bear laying on the couch. But I do think it could be a fun option for kids, the whimsical, and perhaps the more squeamish.

A tutorial can be made available if need be.

I have said before I am not a fan of full mask sporrans, however this is very cool. It is one that I would consider wearing myself.

Great use of a beloved bear. I'll have to keep that idea in mind for the future.

It even rivals my favorite "full mask" sporran, located here, at the bottom of the page. Another classic.

First thought in my head was that I had better not let my wife see this. She is very partial to all things cute.

Thanks guys. I hoped it might make somebody chuckle a little and have a better day. It has been amusing me to no end all day.

Hadn't seen Cookie Monster until now. That's pretty great! Thanks for the link.

For a tutorial, it is very similar to Cookie Monster:

I cut the front of the neck and removed the stuffing from the body, turned inside out, cut the legs and arms along their seams, then sewed up the legs. For a fat bear he was a bit of a pencil neck so sewing up arm holes wouldn't have left enough room to get inside the body when complete.

Leaving armholes open to the neck, I sewed some elastic bands over them from the inside.

Armholes from the outside. Needs some work.

I cut some oversized patches from one of the legs and sewed them over the armholes to cover the elastic (leaving room to expand) and added half of the magnetic clasp to the body.

View from the inside. For the clasp, just pushed it through, put on the washer and bent the tabs over with pliers. Also hemmed the top.

The other half was attached the same way under the chin. Body half is folded over to show the inside for another view of the attachment.

Sewed on a couple of D-rings to the head. Took some planning to get it to lay the way I wanted it.

And that was it. I cut a piece of thin poster board as an insert just to keep his shape, but not sure it really needs it.

The whole thing took maybe about 2 hours, and that was with a lot of overthinking and some rework here and there. Was actually quite fun, plus the bonus of some good practice for making a real fur sporran, especially in the areas of sewing something with hair/fur on the outside. And the whole family still chuckles when they look at it.

Those gutting pics are just a bit too graphic - I nearly threw up in my mouth.
