Pattern ideas, to dress 2 little girls for the games. please help.
Hello,
I am going to the Stone Mountain Highland Games again this year. I have my kilt ready and I can't wait. I also have 2 nieces who will be coming with me and the rest of the family. One of them is 2, but the size of a 4 year old, the other is brand new, she'll be a month old when the games happen. I offered my sister-in-law, the proud mother, my fly plaid to wrap the newborn in if the baby comes to the games. My mother though, saw the tartan cloth and now wants to cut it apart to make dresses or such for the girls. It is a stillwater kilt fly plaid, so mom said she will replace it after the games, but it's just the most economical and easiest way to get Maclaren tartan right now for us. Getting back on topic, my question to y'all is:
What can my mom make for a large 2 year old and a newborn, to wear at the Highland Games, using a square yard of tartan and as much other fabric as she needs? It is fringed on all 4 sides (I think 'pearled" is the term?) so there is no selvedge but plenty of nice matching fringe.
I was thinking for the 2 year old, a one piece dress, white or cream ect from the waist up, with a tartan skirt and some sort of belt/sash at the waist and maybe a 'sash' sewn across one shoulder, and similar for the newborn but made out of a onesy.

When our daughter was younger, I used scarves to make "kilts" for her:

More recently, we used some tartan fabric to replace some ruffles on a denim skirt:

Both were pretty low cost options and worked well.
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Shaun, you should be banned for overloading this thread with the cutes. Adorable is not enough to describe it!
As for the OP, pillowcase dresses have made a comeback lately. The fringe would make a nice hem and you can put a t-shirt, or other shirt underneath for a sweet layered look.

Many ladies wear sashes to display their family tartan. There may be a chance that one of the kilt makers might have a small section of Maclaren tartan large enough to make a sash for each. You could also make a small tartan rosette for each to wear.
