Skunk Fur Dress Sporran
I would like to try my hand at making my own sporran and belts someday. Leather, goat hair, maybe some rabbit skin sporrans would be nice.
Well, I live in Tennessee and we have a lot of skunks around these parts, for sure. Open season on the little varmin year around. I like the looks of the skunk fur sporrans that I've seen. Kinda high dollar too.
So what to you all think about them?
"Nice fur?"
Or,
"Hey Dude, you got a dead skunk in your lap."

Re: Skunk Fur Dress Sporran
L&M Highland Outfitters have made full-mask skunk sporrans in the past, however, I don't think they are in their 2012 line of sporrans. I tend to think of their pelt as a lovely contrast of black white to go with Highland evening attire.

I personally really like the look of skunk fur sporrans. Like has already been said provides a nice contrast. Also, certainly nothing wrong with making yourself a sporran from something that is so readily available to you.

I love mine; named it Pepe.
Really nice feeling fur, and people seem to like it... the only "dead skunk...stinky" comments I ever get are from guys who are obviously feeling inferior and trying to save face, and that doesn't happen often.
...as soon as they find out that it's named Pepe, the girls usually want to pet it.

Full mask skunk sporran sounds good to me. creagdhubh already expressed my general sentiments.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I call mine Flower. It is currently my only sporran but serves just about every function I need.

Re: Skunk Fur Dress Sporran
I used to know a fellow in North Carolina that made them before I saw any anywhere else. He claimed it was designed for the chief of Clan MacPew.
All of the ones I've seen looked good, and I'd love to have a full mask if I had a need for a new one. May find a need some day. The contrasted colors make for an interesting look, and the fur does have a nice feel. I rather like the brown-and-white ones I've seen. Unlike other full mask sporrans, the black-and-white tend to look very formal to me.

Re: Skunk Fur Dress Sporran
I have a skunk fur sporran from Fergusson Britt it really is a wonderful piece of kit. I admit I've worn it more for day wear than anything else. If you are interested in these things, J. Charles Thompson says the following in "So You're going to wear the kilt!" pg 72 in the 3rd edition:
"I suggested that a skunk-skin sporran, with it's black and white, would look well with the black and silver of Scottish evening dress." He goes on to say that a taxidermist in Nova Scotia has taken him up on it and now skunk skin sporrans are now readily available."
For me Thompson is not the be all end all, however his views are a good place to start.

Re: Skunk Fur Dress Sporran
I heartily endorse skunk fur for sporrans. It's thick and rich with a sleekness that keeps it from being too bushy.
I love using it, as the black/chocolate & white contrast looks great, and the defined stripes give real direction to an otherwise very dark pelt.
The only thing I don't like about skunk is the undercoat. It's VERY fine and gets into the sewing and also floats around the room when you trim/cut the hide.
