    Sporran Strap Holder

    Readers;
    I have made a couple of sporrans & have a question. When you make a sporran for a strap/chain why is the shape of the 'bracket' that the belt passes thru on the back of the sporran a square/rectangle shape?
    Would it not be better if it were a " U" shape, or rather a " V " shape with a " U" shaped base angle, this would follow the line of the strap/chain as it passes around the wearers body, & should make the sporran lie the better, & should distribute the weight a bit better. I noted on my Nightstalker sporran, the wide, long backstrap is quite clumsy with a strap thru it. My own made sporrans had two long, thin backstraps, & they seem to work the better.
    OK Sporran Pros-- Why make a long, thick, backstrap on a sporran.
    DYI s everywhere, seek an answer(or at least this one does)!

    There are others here more qualified than I to comment, but on nearly all the sporrans I've seen, the "bracket" is for a short (3" or so) leather strap with a D-ring on either end which fits under the "bracket". These provide a connection point for snap clasps at the ends of the sporran strap proper. As it is very short, I doubt that non-linear shaping would have any significant effect on the "lie" of the sporran.

    I can't say that this has been my experience. My brown leather Nightstalker sits quite comfortably close to my body. Surly, given time all leather will conform - both the sporran and the strap.

    The short strap with D-rings you're talking about is fairly common, but I'm not sure that those were originally used on sporrans with a straight tab on the back. I think someone came up with that idea as a 'fix'. But a lot of original Scottish sporrans were made with the straight tab on the back, and used with just a sporran belt run through it.

    As to the original question, there are some Scottish sporrans that do as you suggest. The brass-cantle MOD sporrans just have 'rings' on the back that the belt passes through, and they are set at an angle on each side to match the drape of the sporran belt.

    But doing that on the back of a leather sporran might be problematic if it's done with leather tabs, because the sporran belt would need to curve to go through them. Either the tabs would have to be put on with enough slop so that the sporran belt could twist slightly as it passes through, or the belt itself would have to be extremely soft so it could make the curve.

    Tobus-Chas-Drummer Boy!
    For the benefit of other new--to--kilts folks, let me here Confess-CRY Peccavi(or some such Latin). In the matter of Sporran 'hanging" I did not know the 'tail from the head of the horse'. I had run a single, long, strap thru the NigthStalker nylon 'backstrap'. This strap had not the benefits of a snap to clip to the two rings. It appears that the 'backstrap' is used when you wear the Sporran on a waist-belt. Do I have this detail correctly? This is my first commerical sporran-and even these are not idiot proof.
    Thanks, Rabble, for the assistance.
