    Tartan cockade?

So I've been looking through the forum for info on replacing the standard self-colored cockade on the balmoral with one made of tartan material. I'm sure someone's done this before, and I was wondering if anyone has some advice/knowledge/wisdom/PICTURES of how things should be? for example: to hem or not? Size? Material? Etc...

Well rabble! To it! Do yer worst lads and lassies!

    just a square

When tartan is used as a cockade, it is usually just a square piece of material maybe three inches. I'd make it just a bit larger than your badge. You could back it with some light weight fusible interfacing and then stitch it on the bonnet. There is a photo of one in member Bold Highlander's album.

    Combination...

I like the combination of a square/rectangle of tartan...edges left raw...with the black silk bow on top (basically just replacing the back half of the cockade). I've seen them done in all tartan as well as a combination of the same tartan...ancient colors for the backing and modern for the front bow, etc.

Don't have any good photos handy, but I've done the 'tartan square' before and liked the look. I have not done anything too fancy, I generally just cut a square, fray the edges a bit, and pin it down with the badge.
off topic, I've also been playing with making cockades in livery colors.
