Hadrian's wall
The Romans built Hadrian's Wall to keep the Picts out of Roman Britain.
Eventually, the Picts died off, and were replaced by the Celts.
When the Celts encountered the Wall, they asked the Romans what it was for.
Told the reason, the Celts relied, "But they're all dead; we live here now."
To which the Romans responded:
"Picts, or it didn't happen."

Tragic, really, how Scotland came to be depicted.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the first recorded incident of Picts that wouldn't download.

The Romans weren't satisfied with the Celts reply ... which only goes to prove ... " that a Pict is worth a thousand words " .

I have deep admiration for the Ancient Romans for many reasons, including the fact that they were deeply, genuinely and quite understandably afraid (also for many reasons) of the Caledonian Celts. Hadrian is easily my favorite Roman emperor (my Hadrian denarius is one of the jewels of my ancient coin collection), largely because of his love of architecture and civil engineering, and his fortification wall in Brittania is testimony to not only his military breeding and Builder's Heart, but also his shrewd respect for the Highlanders' "credible threat" to the northern frontier of his empire. I am therefore quite certain he would be very pleased and very honored to know that his Wall is located very near what is in my opinion one of the greatest and most beautiful feats of modern civil, hydraulic and mechanical engineering (and located in what he would consider enemy territory), the Falkirk Wheel:
