Jock the Canny

Auld Jock and his wife were traveling by car through the countryside but were getting too tired to continue. They noticed a fine country inn and decided to take a room for the night. But on leaving the next morning, the desk clerk handed over a bill for 300 UK pounds.

Jock was outraged! He demanded to know why the charge was so high. He shouted that although it's a very nice place, the rooms certainly aren't worth £300 for a night! The clerk responded that it was the standard rate for a room. Jock called for the manager.

The manager came from the back office, listened carefully to Jock, and quietly explained that the inn has an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a well-equipped business center and a theater that were all available for their use.

"But we din'nae use 'em," said Jock.

"Ah, but you could have," said the manager. He also mentioned the Inn's excellent golf courses, health spa and extensive network of hiking trails.

"But we din'nae use 'em," said Jock.

"Well, we have them, and you could have," the manager replied.

The discussion went on like this, and Jock soon saw no future in it. He agreed to pay so they could leave. He carefully wrote out a check and handed it across the counter.

The manager smiled slyly during this but was very surprised when he looked at the cheque. "But sir, this cheque is only made out for 50 pounds!"

''Aye," said Jock. "That's true. I charged you £250 for sleeping with my wife."

"The very nerve," said the manager. " I never did that! "

"Well," said Jock, "Too bad -- she was here, and you could have!

Cameron, that is the third version of this story I have seen in as many weeks, but undoubtedly the best!
