THe Sun Never Sets on the Brittish Empire
Yesterday at a family gathering (Scots, Irish and one Hungarian) I was enlightened with the following:
The Sun never set on the British Empire because......
God didn't trust the English in the dark.
It just made so much sense, now that it was explained to me.

It also saved the expense of evening wear. Thrifty lot.

Interestingly it was an empire largely built by Scots...but then, again, Scots ARE British.

Another old one:
The Scots keep the Sabbath and everything else they can lay their hands on,
The Welsh pray on their knees and on their neighbours,
The Irish don't know what they want but they are prepared to die fighting for it,
And the English are a self-made people, thus relieving the Almighty of a awesome responsibility.

I know that this is Craig's corner and the posts here are made with the intent of humor.
I also know that often humor is cruel or at someones' expense.
But therein lies the rub. Can we not be humorous without defaming, mocking or ridiculing?
Can we not voice our humor without promoting prejudice or bigotry?
I kindly ask that you take a moment before you post to ask yourself, If this were aimed at you, would it still be funny?

Well said, Steve.
I was about to post something along the same lines until I saw that you had already done so.
Your post deserves a kyleism (+ 1)!

Steve;
It is humor, and yes it is humorous even aimed at me. While my family has a Scottish sir name, we spent a loooong time in England before coming to America. So, long in fact that the last census listed my family as English.
And I married an Irish lass and she thought John's post was funny (she bought me the
t-shirt).
So while one finger is pointing out, three others are pointing back at me.

WWCD?
What would Craig do? He would laugh too!
Oh come on. I know the "politically correct" has taken over everything, but I come to "Craig's corner" knowing that I might smile, laugh, wince or groan (much to the delight of the late Craig)

I agree that whilst 'humour' can be racist/anti-religionist etc at times, like Tess I come here for a laugh - often at my own expense, and being a descendant of the Scots, living in England, with Welsh blood on my mother's side, I've yet to be offended by the humour posted in here.
Wishing I could delete some from my memory they can be that corny, yes, but never offended.
And if you look at the humour of most comedians, its generally aimed at their wife, or mother-in-law, rival town (Manchester/liverpool as per John Bishop), or political parties, and generally no-one takes any offence.
