Dealing with Andrew Elliot Ltd
I just got off the phone with Robin Elliot of Andrew Elliot Ltd, weavers of tartan and tweeds etc. I called to pay for a length of the 1790 McDuff Orionson has had replicated. Robin was very pleasant to deal with and the payment process went smoothly. He is trusting enough that he actually put the tartan in the mail yesterday, with no guarantee on my part that he would ever get paid (of course I don't do business that way, and would probably be black balled here if I did) but the whole process has been a lot like doing things the old fashioned way, with nothing but a hand shake to seal the deal. Robin sent the tartan by regualar mail with delivery estimated to be five days. That's pretty fast. Coming by mail, rather than through UPS, I shouldn't have to pay any brokerage fees. Tartan sent through UPS incurs a stiff brokerage fee.

I'll second the recommendation. I deal with Robin on a regular basis and he's always helpful. He'll weave the Culloden special that is detailed on a separate thread, he's also working with me to replicate the original tartan of the 64th Regt (Loudoun's Highlanders).

Robin is a good honest guy to deal with.
I received an e-mail purportedly from him, and looking very genuine and convincing, asking me if I would be willing to collect payments from overseas on his behalf. I knew this wasn't his way of working and suspected it was a scammer at work so I contacted him directly and he confirmed that his database had been attacked and an attempt had been made to scam some of his Scottish based customers.

Well said, Benning Boy. I could not agree with you more. Robin is old school and a very honourable man. I have been dealing with him for the better part of the last 2 years on this delightful journey and every second have been a pure pleasure.
I can't wait to see what magic you create with the 1790 MacDuff.
If anyone else is interested in securing some of this magnificent recreation of a very old and historically important, just drop me a PM.

The 1790 McDuff arrived Tuesday. I guess it took about seven days to get here, not five, but who cares that's still plenty fast, and we did have a holiday here, which means the postal workers were working even less than normally. I'm happy. Coming by mail, and not UPS, saved me lots of money in customs brokerage fees -- there were none at all. The tartan is drop dead gorgeous. The sett is woven almost perfectly square, the measurements warp-wise and woof-wise are within a wide hair of being the same, which tells me Elliot's have tighter quality control standards than other mills. Very high quality, a gentlemanly way of doing business, I'd say Elliot's should be at the top of your your tartan weavers list.
