Grey Thistle Tartan
I was in a gold bros shop and saw a Grey Thistle Tartan kilt, it is an 8yrd kilt, I believe at about £240. It was black/ dark Grey with faint thistles in the squares. I really liked this.
Can anybody tell me if this is a true tartan and if so if anybody else stocks it as I want to ensure the final kilt is made in Scotland rather than risk buying from them.

Hi, Craig – that kilt sounds like a variation on a theme I have often seen at Scotweb. If it is like those I have seen before, it is not actually a tartan, but it has an emblem in the squares. I have seen varieties with the thistle, the rampant lion and the Welsh dragon, in several colours. There are probably others too.
Regards,
Mike

I've also seen the Canadian Maple Leaf and the Arms of the United States.

Yup, HOS sells them on their web site under their 5 yd "traditional" wool kilts in a whole variety of "setts":
Canadian Maple Leaf
Harp Shamrock Emerald
Lion Rampant Gold or Navy or Purple
Monarch of the Glen Stag Purple
Scottish Thistle Navy or Purple
US Great Seal (not the animal)
Welsh Dragon in Red/Green/White
.....some of these come in different "sett" sizes as well

Then they also sell "tartan" traditional kilts with similar images built into the fabric so that they show up on the pleasts and fell when sewn up, typically either the Saltire or the Rampant Lion:

Although they may be sewn up in the traditional construction style none of them could really be called traditional kilts as they are not really true tartan setts. Novel, but you probably would not find one in a real highlander's closet (nor my "lowlander descendant" kilt closet), mostly for tourists. If you are interested keep and eye on their website for sales (just had a 15% off sale for Tartan Day) or their ebay sites where they sell them a little bit cheaper sometimes.
