    Kentucky Tartan

A while back I asked if there was any interest in the Kentucky Tartan, to see if there were enough of us to actually get an affordable price. While there were a couple, it still didn't really seem feasable.

This morning I deciced to try and find Lexington and Louisville Celtic/Scottish societies to see if I might still be able to generate enough interest.

What I found was http://www.kentuckyunited.org/home.html . The Kentucky United Pip & Drums have just deciced (in OCT) to get the KY tartan as their uniform (kinda makes sense). Anyway, I wrote them the following e-mail
    Hello,

My name is Adam Duke, and I found your web site this morning while looking for information about the KY tartan. I have recently been trying to drum up enough people to order KY tartan at an affordable price. I have a couple of people on www.xmarksthescot.com (a site dedicated to kilt wearing) but it was still not enough to justify the cost. I was actually looking for Louisville and Lexington Caledonian societies when I found your web site.

If you have not yet ordered your new band kilts, would it be possible for others to join in with the order either for just tartan or for a made kilt? Secondly, if you are still looking for kilt makers I would recommend going to www.xmarksthescot.com as many US and Canadian kilt makers post there regularly (I personally hope to get my KY tartan in a 4 yard box pleat by Matt Newsome in NC)

    Thank you,

    Adam N. Duke
Hopefully they will respond and the few of us who were interested can get our KY tartan. Also X Marks may get an infusion of KY members .

    Adam

Hopefully it works out, Adam. I don't think I'm going to be able to participate this round, as I'm probably going to be taking a trip to Scotland this summer.

It certainly would be nice to have more Kentucky members here.

    Got a response last night.

Greetings Adam and thank you for you inquiry.
Unfortunatly we have already placed our order and another order (for
us) will not take place until we have a need in the future. However
that could be 6 months down the road.
Our Kilts are 8 yard, 16 oz, pleated to the sett.
If you would like to take advantage of tagging onto our next order I
can put you on a will call list for future orders as well as anyone
    else.
    Thanks again,
    Rick Clayburn, Treasurer
    Kentucky United Pipes and Drums
I sent another e-mail asking who is making their kilts, so I may be able to still come up with one anyway.

    Adam,

All you'll need for your 4 yard kilt would be 2 yards of their double width cloth. You might want to tell the pipe band that 2 yards is all you would need and see if they can let you know if they have extra. Chances are, they might.

We had a bunch of Carolina tartan cloth woven up for a pipe band here, and in order to guarantee that the band would get enough cloth for all their kilts, the mill had to actually produce a bit more cloth than the band ordered. So we ended up with some yardage on our hands (sorry guys, it's all been spoken for already!).

So it might be worth a shot -- in any case, couldn't hurt to ask!

Remember, too, that I can always have what you want custom woven for you.
    Aye,
    Matt

I know it can be custom woven, just that that is prohibitively expensive. I did send another e-mail asking who is making their kilts to see if I could get 2-2.5 yards cheaper than having it woven myself (or yourself as the case may be) or if they would not sell me yardage would they have enough to make a kilt for me? I haven't heard back yet.
