    Tartan ID Please

    Hello All,

I have just aquired a kilt that came with a sporran. I am going to keep the sporran and am going to dispose of the kilt (too small anyway).

The problem is, I hare no idea that the tartan is. This is it.

It does look like this, MacDonald of Clanranald.

But, as you can see, there is no white overcheck on my kilt. So what is it?

    Any ideas anyone?

    Regards

    Chas

Yup. It's just the standard MacDonald tartan.

    Thanks Jock and slohairt.

It's quite obvious now that I've been told the right answer! I do feel a fool.

    Thanks again.

Thank You, thank You, for that ringing vote of confidence and endorsement in my abilities. My excuse is that I failed to spot the farmyard colours.

I meant no insult by my comment, that is homer simpson's utterance of choice when he realizes he has made a simple mistake, not to be confused with the "duh" usually associated with a situation of insinuated ignorance. Please pardon any discomfort caused by this confusion.
Actally your tartan appears more likely to be ancient macdonald rather than modern macdonald, which could explain your difficulty in recognition due to the different color palate, an understandible error.
Please pardon any discomfort I may have caused.

Don't worry about it. There are so many MacDonald tartans that have little variation it's understandable. Plus the colours are a bit odd-looking to me. (Could just be my monitor.) It looks black, turquoise, pink, and royal blue.

I have a kilt in the House of Edgar Nevis range Ancient MacDonald which is nearly fluorescent in how bright some of the colors are, orange and bright green and bright royal blue, with what appears to be a broad black stripe as well, so I know how easy it is to confuse this color set and not believe it looks like the more common Modern MacDonald.

    HoE Nevis Ancient MacDonald

    much darker standard Modern MacDonald

And in person I can tell you the Modern MacDonald typically has an even darker overall appearence of the background behind the red stripes, while on the Ancients, particularly the HoE Nevis the background is very bright and colorful and the red stripe becomes almost optic orange.

Jeff - no problem and no insult taken. For some reason I had Clanranald stuck in my head - like a song you can't get rid of. When I looked it up I saw the white over check, I never asked the basic question - What about the MacDonalds that don't come from Clanranald? When the answer came back, it was one of those foot and mouth moments, all I wanted to do was change feet and let the thread die quietly.

The kilt itself is quite peculiar. It is hand sewn and there are a variety of buttons on the inside for braces (suspenders). The really strange thing is the colours. The picture is not accurate. The colours are different indoors and outdoors.

Indoors, the green is a bright lime green and very vibrant, in fact it takes over. The blue is almost black and although it gives the impression that it might be blue, you wouldn't stake your life on it. The red is a dirty red.

Outdoors (in good light), it is as you see it in the picture. As soon as there is a bit of cloud or shadow then we revert to an indoor look.

As soon as I can give it a bit of a tidy up and true photography, I will be selling it (my wife really hates it).

For the record Jeff, I always welcome your comments - I might not agree with them, but I always thing they are fair.

    Regards

    Chas
