tartan suggestion?
I'm a piper and compete solo, i am not scottish, but do have some irish in me McKiernan to be exact. Anyways, i currently wear black watch tartan when i compete, do to a regimental affiliation. Sadly, black watch has become an overused and over worn taran.
Can anyone suggest a nice, dark tartan that has no clan affiliation etc, a 'free' tartan so to speak? I have worn the campbell taran in the past, with an old militia unit. The darks definitely appeal to me.

How would you feel about wearing the Tartan you see as the background to this forum?
It is the X Marks Tartan. The world's first internet Tartan.
And as a member of this forum you are completely authorized to wear it.

Tartan -Help
There are many Tartans that are "free" to wear -Freedom of Scottland -Flower of Scottland and you could even wear your state Tartan like Georgia Tartan is nice. You could even wear single color tartans like Sport Kilt putts out. Hope this helps

If you like dark, check out the "silver thistle" at
http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/qRe...lver%20thistle
If you are unfamiliar with the SRT, you can click on the picture to see a bigger picture, and then click on it again for an even larger view. There are LOTS of dark tartans out there, so keep looking and good luck.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Hey, I went to school with a McKiernan. He was originally from Cork, and I understand there are still a sizable number of his relatives there.
Anyway, there are some Irish district tartans that may fit your needs. Such as the Tara, or Cork, County tartans.

Where do you live, or have lived in the past? There are several state, district and city tartans, as well as corporations and college/university tartans. You don't have to limit yourself to only the tartans in your family history, although you certainly can if you want.
