Dinner With The Lord Lyon
On Thursday, September 9th, the Saint Andrew's Society of Washington DC will have as their guest The Right Honourable The Lord Lyon, King of Arms. Dinner meetings of the Society are usually limited to members only, however, given the wide spread interest in Scottish heraldry, anyone wishing to attend may do so by contacting the Society via its website, where full details of the evening may be found. www.saintandrewsociety.org

The Lord Lyon is scheduled, also, to be at the Ligonier Highland games, Ligonier, Pennsylvania, on September 11. He is definitely making his rounds!

As a retired Scottish lawyer I can confirm that The Right Honourable David Sellar, The Lord Lyon, King of Arms, is a friendly and approachable fellow who would be happy to chat informally with you during the evening. If you are in the Washington area I would highly recommend that you take this opportunity to attend this prestigious event.

I may have to investigate airfare to Washington DC! I'm not so sure I'd want to miss this rare opportunity!

I can attest to that, too. Lyon is a personable and unpretentious man.

I have heard from Rominy Squire, Heraldic Artist to the Court of the Lord, who agrees on the latest Lord Lyon.

The Lord Lyon dinner went off without a hitch, with more than 80 ladies and gentlemen in attendance. Lyon answered a number of questions concerning the requirements to successfully apply for a grant of arms from his office, as well as sharing several amusing anecdotes with the audience. Most pleasantly fellow X Marker and Clan MacMillan stalwart David Pope and his lovely wife Jeanne drove up from North Carolina for the evening. We shared a table with them and after Lyon's speech we retired to a quiet corner of the Belle Haven Country Club (named for the 17th century land grant in favour of the then Lord Belhaven upon which the country club is sited). Over coffee we continued to chat about heraldry, kilts and such things until security came through to lock up for the night and our wives demanded respite!.
The choice of the Belle Haven country club for the Lord Lyon dinner was particularly apt as the Lords Belhaven are Scots, and interestingly their arms are quartered with the field of each quarter being the same colour (Quarterly 1st & 4th, gules a mullet argent between 3 cinqfoils ermine (for Hamilton of Udston); 2nd & 3rd gules a man's heart proper argent between 3 cinqfoils ermine (for Hamilton of Raploch) all within a bordure argent).
If you ever have a chance to hear Lord Lyon speak-- even if you are not particularly interested in heraldry-- don't miss it.
