Streamers and arms by John Gaylor

I recently had John Gaylor do some streamers for me and he also did a rendering of my arms. Here are the 2 streamers that he did for me.

He found out that I am Chief Chaplain for my County Fire Service and he included 2 versions with clerical headgear. I have never had this done before and would appreciate someone shedding some light on this subject for me.

Good for you Harold! They look great. I'd make a streamer if I had a design like those.

the first hat is the medieval form of a mortarboard, like it was used for example in Germany. See picture of Martin Luther

    (source: wikimedia)

the second is a prelate hat (galero) used in catholic clerical heraldry

the colour and number of tassels (fiocchi) depends on the rank of the cleric.

for a priest both are black. Two tassels, one on each side (2 x 1, 1 row). For the pope and cardinals both are purple (2 x 15, 5 rows)

on this site (in french) are some nice renditions for all ranks.

Very nice! I was quite impressed by Mr. Gaylor's articles that displayed the various flag designs he has devised (specifically in Tak Tent issues 31 and 57), and yours do not disappoint.

    Ecclesiatical Hats In Heraldry

Hats, in the ecclesiastical sense, are accorded to ordained clergy who may use them in lieu of their personal crest above their arms. Generally speaking these hats are limited to the Roman, Anglican, and Scottish clergy, and each denomination has its own tradition governing not only the number of tassels, but also the colours of the hat and cords.

Popes do not use galeri; and cardinals are red, purple/violet is used in various ways by the three classes of monsignor.

Nice job with those. I like the use of the clerical heraldry also. I not on that page that has all the various clerical ranks that Military Chaplains have gold around their black cord, I wonder if something similar has ever been adapted for the fire service, which is relatively new compared to the art of heraldry. I know there is an association of fire chaplains they might know something about that.
