    Any Gilmores out there????

I have a question. As undoubtedly many of you know by now I am engaged to the most beautiful, and wonderful, and talented, and beautiful woman in the world. She is under the impression that her mother's family is of Scottish heritage. Unfortunatly I cannot find anything about a tartan. We were hoping to use a tartan representing her side of the family in conjunction with the Graham tartan for our handfasting ceremony (think of it as a replacement for the unity candle. We are getting married on a pier and candles don't work well in the wind). If anyone has in information on a Gilmore tartan or if Gilmore is a Sept of a clan which one.

    Graham

    thank you

    Yes actually. Hiya.

Gilmore's use the Morrison tartan as they are a sept of the clan.

    Where in NC are you?

    Hello "cousin".

Gilmore is one of the primary septs of Clan Morrison.

Owing to the long history, the inconsistency in anglicizing Gaelic names, and the changes in the English language over the centuries, many surnames of today can trace their ancestry back to the Morrisons. These are known as "septs" of the clan. Not all families with these "sept" names are necessarily Morrisons, however, as many chose (or were given) names that sounded like pre-existing English names.

The primary septs most often recognized as being Morrisons are Gilmore, Brieve and MacBrieve. Other families that could be Morrisons include Breive, Gillamor, Gillemoire, Gillemor, Gillemore, Gillemur, Gillemure, Gilmer, Gilmoir, Gilmor, Gilmour, Gilmoure, Gilmur, Gilmure, Gylmor, MacBreive, MacGilmor, MacIllimhier, Moris, Morison, Morris, Morrieson, Morrison, Murieson, Murison and Murrison.

I'm not sure how this translates to tartans...Perhaps there is a Gilmore tartan that I have not seen.

...and there's always the Carolina tartan, if the Morrison connection doesn't work out.

There isn't a Gilmore tartan unfortunetly. like other septs of Morrison Gilmores use the Morrison tartan. You can check the tartans in most of the advertiser's stores on here.

Gilmore is NOT a sept of the Morrison clan. It IS the Morrison clan.

Gilmore is from the Gaelic for devotee of the Virgin Mary. It was anglicized to Morrison for some reason. If anything, Morrison is a sept of the Gilmore clan, since it is a later derivation.

One really can't rely on lists of clan septs. The only thing most of them are good for is to sit on on a rainy day when you are outdoors and regimental. Some are widely inaccurate, some the works of fantasy or sloppy research, and some were invented by tartan merchants to induce the public to buy their wares, no matter how remote their connection to Scotland.

The only (well, maybe there is one other) way to discover which clan, if any, you ancestors were associated with is the painstaking task of tracing one's ancestry backward in time, documenting one generation well before researching the one that came before. The other way that sometimes give unassailable results is Y DNA testing.

My stepdad is a Gilmore, though he was adopted.

I had though that was an Irish name, but I guess I was wrong

Gil, good to see you back on the board. Are you back in the States or still on your travels? I had thought you were going to be gone a little longer than this.
