I'm the firth one to respond, but unfortunately, I'm not qualified to sign the petition. But, good luck with your effort.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

There are two types of clan recognised by Lord Lyon - Those with a Chief and those without (Armigerous Clans).

Armigerous Clans are those that at one time had a Chief, but no longer do so. This is the current list of Armigerous Clans:

Abercromby, Abernethy, Adair, Adam, Aikenhead, Ainslie, Aiton, Allardice, Anderson, Armstrong, Arnott, Auchinleck, Baillie, Baird, Balfour, Bannatyne, Baxter, Bell, Belshes, Bethune, Beveridge, Binning, Bissett, Blackadder, Blackstock, Blair, Blane, Blyth, Boswell, Brisbane, Buchanan, Butter, Byres, Cairns, Calder, Caldwell, Callender, Campbell of Breadalbane, Campbell of Cawdor, Carruthers, Cheyne, Chalmers, Clelland, Clephane, Cockburn, Congilton, Craig, Crawford, Crosbie, Dalmahoy, Dalrymple, Dalzell, Dennistoun, Don, Douglas, Duncan, Dunlop, Edmonstone, Fairlie, Falconer, Fenton, Fleming, Fletcher, Forrester, Fotheringham, Fullarton, Galbraith, Galloway, Gardyne, Gartshore, Gayre, Ged, Gibsone, Gladstains, Glas, Glen, Glendinning, Gray, Gunn, Haliburton, Halkerston, Halket, Hepburn, Heron, Herries, Hogg, Hopkirk, Horsburgh, Houston, Hutton, Inglis, Innes, Kelly, Kinloch, Kinnaird, Kinnear, Kinninmont, Kirkcaldy, Kirkpatrick, Laing, Lammie, Langlands, Learmonth, Little, Logan, Logie, Lundin, Lyle, MacAulay, Macbrayne, MacDuff, MacEwen, MacFarlane, Macfie, Macgillivray, MacInnes, MacIver, Mackie, MacLellan, Macquarrie, Macqueen, Macrae, Masterton, Maule, Maxton, Maxwell, McCorquodale, McCulloch, McKerrell, Meldrum, Melville, Mercer, Middleton, Moncur, Monteith, Monypenny, Mouat, Moubray, Mow, Muir, Murray of Atholl, Nairn, Nevoy, Newlands, Newton, Norvel, Ochterlony, Orrock, Paisley, Paterson, Pennycook, Pentland, Peter, Pitblado, Pitcairn, Pollock, Polwarth, Porterfield, Preston, Pringle, Purves, Rait, Ralston, Renton, Roberton, Rossie, Russell, Rutherford, Schaw, Seton, Skirving, Somerville, Spalding, Spens, Spottiswood, Stewart, Stewart of Appin, Strachan, Straiton, Sydserf, Symmers, Tailyour, Tait, Tennant, Troup, Turnbull, Tweedie, Udny, Vans, Walkinshaw, Wardlaw, Watson, Wauchope, Weir, Whitefoord, Whitelaw, Wishart, Young

(I have emboldened the 'F's - Note-Firth is not among them, so it never had a Chief.)

Should one of these Armigerous Clans produce a Chief, then that person might be recognised by Lord Lyon and the clan becomes a Clan. Cunningham was the last Clan to do so and Wood before that.

Firth is not a notably Scottish name. In fact it is South Yorkshire or Middle England. Coupled with the fact that it never was an Armigerous Clan, then I really think we are more likely to see a second coming before we see Firth recognised.

Following on from this; there is a procedure and an on-line petition is not part of it. Ten Scottish armigers of the name Firth (not English) must approach Lord Lyon and he will then start the process. So the first thing to do is find nine other Firths who can provably trace their ancestry to a Firth living in Scotland and each of them must apply for a grant from Lord Lyon. Once they have their grants then they can approach him with an eye to getting their name recognised.

The granting process can take up to two years and the first part of recognition is laid down as ten years, followed by a second ten year period.

    Good Luck.

I think, ScotKiwi, that you are missing the point.

Lord Lyon will recognise a person as Chief of a Clan if their clan appears on the list in my first post. Frith is not now, nor ever was a big Scottish name (if at all).

Tracing the ancestry is not enough, at all. It would have to be Frith ancestry. The name Frith would have to be recorded as being born or from Scotland.

At the moment there are almost 1/4 of a million Polish people living and working and producing babies in Scotland. In 20 years time, will Lord Lyon recognise Clan Belowovski? No. Why not, if they are born in Scotland. Because the name Belowovski (like Frith) does not appear on the list.

I am sorry, ScotKiwi, but you are going to waste a lot of time and a considerable amount of money on something that can never be achieved. It is predestined to fail.

You would be far better off, getting some Friths together and approaching another Clan with the idea of joining them. Then you would have a Chief and a clan structure around you.

    Sorry
