    Clan Blaylock?

So my father-in-law's last name is Blaylock. He believes it to be Scottish. I did some research and once upon a time I found a clan badge but there is no tartan that I'm aware of. I also found that Blaylock is possibly a sept of Clan Douglas.

Could anyone offer any assistance on this?

Checking with the Standing council of Scottish Chiefs I can find no current clan under the name Blaylock.

Checking my Clan and Sett sources I find the name Blaylock not associated with or a Sept of of any Scottish Clan.

This does not mean that your people did not come from Scotland. Nor does it imply that they were not at one time affiliated with a Clan.

Many lowlanders, although true Scots, were not part of the Clan system. Not everyone in the Highlands was either. But all were Scots.

There is a Tartan listed with The Scottish Tartans Authority under both the Blaylock and Blalak spellings.

The Blaylock Tartan is ITI #5925

"Designed by Dr Phil Smith in 1953 for Beverley Blaylock of Edmonton, Canada. Can be worn by all of the name and its spelling variations.

The Blalak Tartan is ITI #6642

"One of the entries in the tartan weaving competition at 'Covergence - Atlanta' in 1999 - probably observed by Dr. Phil Smith. 'Convergance - Atlanta' was the great bi-annual handweavers' convention held in various cities."

    I hope this helps.

    I wear the kilt because:
    Swish + Swagger = Swoon.

try emailing: //blaylock@cisco.com as he has taken one of the Blaylock lines back to 1550.

For what it's worth, I suspect that it may be an English name.

The name may very well be Scottish.

Black, 'The Surnames of Scotland, Their Origin, Meaning and History' has these entries:

BLAYLOC. A rare name recorded in Annan, 1801. Suggested to be from OE. blae meaning livid or lead-colored hair, but perhaps of local origin. Cf. under Blellock.

BLELLOCK, Bleloch, Blelloch. Of local origin from some small place of the name. There are two places named Blelock in Perthshire (in 1652 Bleloch), and Blelack (in 1657 Bleloch) is a farm name in the parish of Logie-Coldstone, Aberdeenshire. There is also a Blailoch in Selkirk Retours (1687)

And there is also this: http://www.surnamedb.com/surname.aspx?name=Blaylock
