    Clan Blaylock (Revisited)

I just discovered a closed thread concerning the origins of the Blaylock name, and its Scottish connection. The thread ended with no real answers, so I thought I'd add this if anyone's interested. I am the Blaylock Sept Commissioner for the Clan Douglas Society of North America.

Blaylock is a Scottish name originating in the Annandale, Dumfiesshire region of southwestern Scotland. It is also found in northwestern English counties (Cumbria). It is always spelled with the "Y" in Scotland, but to my informal observations more often without in the U.S.

It is associated as a sept of Clan Douglas because that clan owned much of the Annandale and Dumfriesshire lands and had at least three castles in those areas: Drumlanrig Castle, Morton Castle, and Threave Castle.

As a sept, the Blaylocks have no Clan Badge, nor a Coat of Arms (the ones you can buy from the vendors are not "real" in that they are not registered with the Lord Lyon of Scotland, though in the U.S. it is perfectly legal to use any coat of arms you like). Their IS a Blaylock family tartan, created by Dr. Phillip Smith in 1951, though the Blaylock Clan tartan is the Douglas.

You may send me a Private Message (or post here, of course) if you have any questions. I'd be pleased to hear from you.

    Joe Blaylock
