Clan Finley......Outlawed?!?!
I was just surfing the web and I came across this.http://cafamilies.org/finley/clan_finley.html
So, my question is why was Clan Finley outlawed, did Finley just decide to change name and turned into Farquharson (therefore making Clan Farquharson actually Clan Finley)? My mind is swimming with multiple questions....mostly I think its just kind of neat, Having the last name as Finley and all to know that it may have been outlawed.
Any other opinions or answers with more information regarding this are greatly welcomed.

Clan Farquharson claims all the following as septs:
Barrie, Bowman, Brebner, Bremner, Bryant, Carracher, Clan Christie, Christison, Christy, Coates, Coats, Coutts, Cromar, Farquhar, Ferries, Findlay, Findlayson, Findlaison, Findley, Finlay, Finlayson, Finley, Gracie, Grassick, Greusach, Hardie, Hardy, Herald, Higgins, Higginson, Kellas, Kerracher, Leys, Lion(s), Lyon(s), MacArtney, MacGaig, MacCartney, MacCraig, MacCuaig, MacEaracher, MacErcher, MacErracher, MacFarquhar, MacFerchar, MacHardie, MacHardy, MacKerchar, MacKerracher, MacKindlay, MacKinlay, MacKinley, MacWade, McKinley, Paterson, Patterson, Pattison, Reaich, Reoch, Riach, Souders, Soutter, Tawse, Tay, Wade, Wood.
So I don't think that the Finleys were any more responsible than any of these others.

Okay, thats a fair response, but it does not address my question. The main question that I failed at asking is did Clan Farquharson originate from Clan Finley. I was not asking for a list of septs and associated names. My question was posed to the first two paragraphs of the link that I posted in the O.P. Then I also would like to pose the question if the article is even a credible source.

To be honest, I do not believe that it is even in the slightest bit credible. It reads like supposition piled on supposition and out of which spring facts.
I am sure, if you asked them, that the other septs will claim exactly the same thing.
Sorry.

I am a LONG way from a historian of any sort. However, none of the references seems to be peer reviewed. In fact, they appear to be other similar types of blog/articles. To me that means not a very credible writing from a researched or historically sound finding. A lot of this stuff is family folklore... Fun read and enjoyable, but nothing I would pass on as legitimate histoeical fact.
Just my 2 cents...

Thats the feeling I was getting, I didn't find any credible sources myself. But, I figured that I should ask the rabble considering there is a high chance that some of you have done more of this type of research than myself. Thank you all.
NOW, On to the other question that has been gnawing on me.....Can a Clan be outlawed in the way an individual person can be outlawed?

In the UK a person cannot be outlawed. The last time that happened was 1798.
