Difference between Border and Lowland Clan?
The only non-highland clan in my family tree is Clan Buchanan. I've heard this called a Border clan and not a Lowland clan. What exactly is the difference other than geographical location?

The Highlands are relatively a small part of Scotland. Everything south of the Great Glen is the lowlands. The capital city, Edinburgh, is in the lowlands. The border clans are often called the reiver clans. A lot of this is geographical, but the reivers were known for rape, theft, arson, murder, rustling and all crimes in between. I am not saying that all were guilty, but if your food is stolen, you can either sit down and starve to death, or go and steal someone else's.
The best book on the subject is "The Steel Bonnets" by George MacDonald Fraser.

Er, well actually, the Highlands go much further South than the Great Glen, by about 100 miles, to a geological fault line that goes roughly, just North of Glasgow (on the West side)towards(heading North and East) just North of Stirling. This line is not only a geographical feature it is also a cultural one too.

The folks in Highland Perthshire are getting their dander up, and there are Gordons in the townships of Aberdeenshire who will soon join them.

How could we forget those Campbell chappies and some Macgregors and Macfarlanes, too.
I can see it now: a new rebellion in the making, Highlander vs. Lowlander vs. Borderer, brother against cousin, fathers and sons divided by piles of granite and sandstone. A civil war in the misunderstanding. Arm in arm, Jock, we'll stand atop the Grampians and face south (or east or some place).

Or, we Highlanders------- just a few coach loads----- could pop down to Norfolk, near Thetford I think, with map of Scotland to hand and have a quiet word with a certain fellow whilst he is pouring us a beer!
