    Prentice Tartan or sept?

    Hello again,
Just wondering if anyone out there has ever heard of a link to Prentice surname and a tartan? or Prentice being a Sept of another clan, the only tartans I can find are tied to my surname are by district, for example one place I went was able to find Prentice linked to the edinburgh tartan appearently (though I can't find any Prentice's directly linked to me born there) and then Paisly Renfrew, My Great Grandfather Robert Prentice's place of birth in 1891

This come from me trying to find out what Tartans I can wear other than a few I know of from other surnames in my lineage and generic

    Thanks again

    Iain

Ancestry.com lists the name Prentice in Lanarkshire and Midlothian, lowland counties.

You might find more information on possible clan affiliations here: http://prenticenet.com/news/dewald/

    Good luck!

A quick search on Scotweb's tartan search engine under either Prentice or Prentiss lists a single tartan, an Orban-Prentice personal Modern tartan, but not a whole lot else:

Given those origins, it is pretty safe to say that a connection to a Highland clan probably doesn't exist. Black's Surnames of Scotland states that only about 30% of Scottish surnames are Highland clans, and it has only been in recent times that Lowland families have adopted Highland dress.

That being said, there is certainly nothing wrong with wearing a District tartan from either Scotland or Canada.

I would also recommend a district tartan. Regarding the Orban-Prentice tartan, it is important to note that just because a tartan bears the same name as a family does not always make it appropriate for that family to wear. (For example there is a Dewars tartan which is the corporate tartan for the distillery and would not be appropriate for a person surnamed Dewar to wear as a family tartan).

In this case, the fact that the Orban-Prentice tartan is classed as a "personal tartan" and is for a hyphenated surname suggests to me that it is intended for a particular individual family, and not for all of the name Prentice to wear. I don't really have any further information on it, however. I do note that the designer of that tartan is a participant on this forum, so he may be able to provide more information.

    Matt,

You are correct. I can confirm that this was a commission for an individual, and by extension his immediate family. It's specific for them and in no way was intended, or would be acceptable, for a general tartan for either the Orbans or Prentices.
