Young Clan.
Hello, my Grandfather, James A. Young had come to America from Scotland. Edinburgh, Scotland. Now, I've been trying to do my research as close as possible as I could but, I am not sure if I am.
I have used Google in the past to try and find my Clan's tartan but I've seen quite a few variations for Young. When I seemed to be at a loss I then asked my father about it and he then sent me to e-mail my cousins of the M(a)cDonald family to help. They soon after sent me to Google once more for the Tartan colors.
Could someone reassure me that certain sites that I find with Google ARE the true colors/patterns for my Clan's Tartan.

Young Tartan

If you are hunting for the YOUNG tartan this if the one normally used, but bear in mind that it is a very recent one that is identified with Clan Young, and does not have any actual historical value
and a sample of the actual woven tartan
Lochcarron Young modern tartan

I'm a member of Clan Young (not that that gives me any particular expertise in this matter). If I remember correctly, the Young tartan was registered in 1992. As with a lot of tartans, there is also a weathered version. There is an earlier piece of tartan cloth (early 18th century) that is usually referred to as the Christina Young arisaid. Unfortunately, details of its' provenance escape me at the moment, but a quick internet search should provide the details. I do remember that it has been properly researched as to date, although not use, and is in a museum.

I wonder of your grandfather was related to the James Young who patented a method of extracting paraffin from coal. He is well remembered locally in West Lothian (15 miles west of Edinburgh) and my local high school is named after him
As paulhenry hints at the best way to find your tartan for kilt making purposes is looking at swatches from Lochcarron, House of Edgar or other tartan mills. You can get a physical sample of the actual cloth usually from any highland outfitter for a modest fee
The best place for technical questions, such as thread count and historical data, including digital images, is from the Scottish Tartans Authority
