    Cleland - Clelland?

I have ancestors with the name of CLELAND from (south) Carolna colony, in the early 170s. I am suddenly struck by the idea that Clelland might be a variant spelling, or vice versa. Are there any readers familiar with either the Cleland or Clelland surname? Any possible connection to McClellan?

    Thanks

Spelling is an adventure - Not a science!

Cleland, Clellan, Clelland, MacLelan, MacLeland, MacLelane, MacLelann, MacLelen, MacLellan, MacLelland, MacLellane (and all these Mc and Mc and M') are all part of Clan MacLellan or Clan McLellan.

    Regards

    Chas

I knew a family Clelland in Glasgow. I would have associated the name with someone who originated in the village of Cleland in Lanarkshire, but of course McClelland would loosely translate as son of Clelland.

Remember, spelling is a journey, not a destination!
Scotland is only 1/5 the size of Montana, but Scotland has over 3,000 castles and Montana has none.

I know of some Clellands on the English/Welsh borders at Kington and as far as I know, the family have connections to that area going way back.

Could possibly have originated from the Parish of Balmaclellan in Galloway.
