Mcleish/MacLeish families?
Hi all,
my grandmother was a McLeish and I happily wear the macpherson tartan sometimes for that reason alone.
However, I'd still be interested to know more about how far back it goes or anything significant in the family line, problem is I can only go as far back as my family's photos/info which is to my great great grandfather - James G. McLeish, born 1849 East Lothian, Scotland, and died in Randwick NSW Australia in 1922. Married Grace Anne McDonald (born in victoria, Australia in 1861 and died Sydney, NSW in 1954).
James' son (my great grandfather) was James Edgar McLeish was a gunner (artillery) in the first world war and was the influence in the family for all things kilt and tartan upon my grandmother...... so this side of the family would be nice to know more about because its where my love of tartan and kilts at least in part stems from.
If anyone has McLeishes in their line perhaps James G McLeish features somewhere as a descendant from a common ancestor?

Hello John, My 2XGGfather was William McLiesh, b 22 Apr 1812 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland; d 07 Mar 1875 in Belfast, No. Ireland. He married Beatrix AKA Bethia Simpson B 05 Nov 1813 in Glasgow, Scotland, d 03 Mar 1881 in Union of Belfast, Castlough North District, Ireland. They married 31 July 1834 in North Leith, Midlothian, Scotland and were parents of 13 children. Their 4th child was Margaret McLiesh, b 04 Nov 1840 in Glasgow, d 24 Mar 1918 in Belfast, No. Ireland. She married Peter Milligan, b 14 Feb 1832 in Newtownbreda, Down, N.Ireland, d 4 Sept. 1915 in Belfast, No. Ireland. They were my Great grandparents. Their 12th (and last) child was my grandfather, Archer Godwin Milligan who married Jeannette Wilson Haak. Their 2nd child was my father, Wilson McLiesh Milligan, b 26 Mar 1912 in Flushing, Queens, New York, USA, d 25 Apr 1972 in Fair Lawn, Bergen County, New Jersey, USA. Several of the McLiesh children went from Belfast, Ireland to New Zealand and Australia where there are still living relatives with whom I keep in touch. I have a John B. McL. who married Mary Ann O'Connor. He was born 6 Jun 1876 in No. Ireland (son of James McL. and Jemima Creighton (or Edgar) who died 18 Jun 1930 in Randwick, NSW. James and Jemima (her first husband was James Edgar) both died in Leichhardt, New South Wales. And there are many others. Sounds as if we may be distant cousins! Dorothy Nagy
