Thumbs up Carmichae l Collection goes online!

The Alexander Carmichael will be made available online from this Friday. This should offer a unique opportunity to study a whole host of material, not just tartan, that has previously languished in museum archives. Very exciting!

That is great. Thanks for the heads-up. I will look for it. Have already added it to favorites.

In study the collection I've examined/compared a number of the samples with fragments of various old pieces elsewhere. It appears that far from being the serious academic collector and cultural icon that Alexander Carmichael was responsible for destroying several old plaids by dividing or selling them amongst his friends such Telfer Dunbar and Skeoch Cumming. For example, this piece is very obviously off the sample plaid as that described here. MacGregor of MacGregor has a piece too and there is also a sample in the STA's collection which came from Telfer Dunbar.

A man with great foresight, cultural vandal or a bit of both? You decide.

I suppose it was one of those good ideas at the time that with the benefit of hindsight turned out to be a poor, or at least unhelpful, decision for those following?

Spot on, Jock. I've seen many a regimental flag from the American Civil War that was missing pieces; the veterans would frequently cut stars, etc. and give them away at regimental reunions, etc.
