Another tartan with "flash"
So many of you have asked me about tartans that can be pleated to show a "flash" inside the pleats that I thought I'd post some pics of another tartan that does this well. I've made two of these kilts in the past couple of months. Tartan is Modern Hunting Carrick from House of Edgar in medium weight. Beautiful tartan with a perfect selvedge!
Very subdued when not in motion:

Pleats open up to the gold stripe when the wearer walks:

It is a rare tartan that gives a really great flash - if you want this to work with a kilt that you're making, you need a big contrast in color between the reveal and the hidden part of the pleat, or else it won't be noticeable. And you need to choose the location of the pleats so that the contrasting color is directly below the pleat reveal, rather than hidden deeper in the fold. The best flash comes from a color that is brighter than the overall color of the kilt back. A darker color (even if it contrasts dramatically in hue) tends to be masked by the shadow of the pleat.

Well done, Barb! Thanks for sharing.
I sent you an e-mail, but just FYI, my kilt did arrive in Friday, yet I was out of the office, so it was patiently awaiting my arrival this snowy, Monday morning. The kilt is still in the box and is sitting on my desk. As I work, I continue to glance over at it....jonesing severly, and I can't wait to get home to strap it on! Thank you again for all of your hard work and I am sure everything will be perfect with the kilt. It's inaugural wearing (besides this evening) will be for the upcoming Tartan Day festivities in my hometown of St. Louis, Missouri on April 6. I can't wait!
Best wishes,
