Can you recomend a reasonable Sgian Dubh?

    Hello All,

Well I am putting my kilts together and I would like to have a proper Sgian Dubh.

I am looking at all the $10 ones and they look totally cheap.

Just so you know, I am a knife and sword guy, but this Sgian Dubh stuff is new to me.

    Any recommendations?

    Ray

I have a sgian dubh from Mike McRae at Scotia Metalworks and love it. Beautiful work and he's a nice guy. His website is http://www.scotiametalwork.com/.

Likewise, I have a custom sgian I commissioned from Terry McCrossan (see the red "real sgian dubh" icon, in the right-hand margin of this web site). Another recommended source.

The above are both excellent options. As a knife and sword guy, I`m sure you know that a quality blade will cost a bit, regardless of the form. Another place you might want to checkout is Comrie Craft, of Perthshire, Scotland. I don`t own one of their knives, but I know there are a few people here who would attest to there quality.

I've had good luck with Adriaan Gerber (http://www.adriaangerberknives.com), Michael Wise (http://www.angelfire.com/my/wisecustomknives/) and Nathan Taylor (https://sites.google.com/site/taylorknives/home). Nathan is Taygrd on this forum. Drac on XTMS ( Jim Drouillard) also does great work. Kind of depends on your budget.

In my humble opinion, the most affordable "real" sgian dubh is the one made by Colt. It has a full tang, serviceable steel, and it comes sharp out of the box. The burlwood handle and sheath are also quite nice. This is more of a daywear knife, however, and I wouldn't wear it to a formal/black tie event. They can be found for less than $20 if you look around.

The custom/hand made ones that people are recommending are very nice and would surely put the Colt to shame. For the price, though, it can't be beat

I bought a "entry level" one for 30 bucks. It is marked "J. Nowill & Sons Sheffield". Very basic. Blade a bit on the thin side. On amazon they go for @ 37 bucks. Some negative reviews. I am happy with mine. I refinished the handle and made a better sheath. I honed it and must say it is " scary sharp". You can get one at www.knifeworks.com for 29 bucks. Kindest regards

I own the Cold Steel " Secret edge" which is a sgian dubh neck knife. It is kind of on the modern side and needs a different sheath if I am going to wear it in the hose. The Griv-Ex handles could be replaced with some wood or something. Thanks for the ideas, but more are welcome.
