    Inside waistband wear

I want to carry a sgian-dubh and a flask in a sheath/pouch positioned inside my waistband. That is a little bulky, so do I need to increase the waist measurement to accommodate it? Or are kilts as forgiving as trousers in this regard?

Traditional box pleat heavy wool tartan kilt. (near future purchase)

Why on earth would you wish to carry your sgian inside your waistband? That would be highly unusual, and to anyone witnessing you doing so, probably rather comical too. Sgian gets tucked into your hose, and the flask goes into the sporran...

Since I wear a belt, I attach larger stuff to it on loops and hangers. My "wad-O-keys" usually, as the sporran gets overcrowded with them in it. I use the belts own retaining loop and clip them on it with a climbing carabineer and they hang mostly under the sporran. When pruning tree branches, I clip the saw holster to the belt also.
I can see the use of moving the sgian to a more secure place when little kids are around. They will grab things "to look at it" without asking first. Since it won't fit in the sporran, I have after a close call, taken it out to my truck for safety sake. The idea of a waist mount sheath for it would put it out of easy reach.
I can't say much about the waist sizing as I have to wear my kilts down at jeans level.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

What if you mis-sheathed? Well, you would only do it the once, wouldn't you? ...

Close call on that here in my sock caused me to quit using it as a letter opener. Would definitely prefer the waist sheath be outside the kilt and using the Sgians own sheath also. I have put a detent in it so that the blade won't come out easily.

If you have that much that you want/need to hang on your belt, I would recommend trying a "piper's pouch." I have both of the models on that page, and use them at various times. The smaller one is perfect for a digital camera, or maybe a really fat wallet, with little room to spare. The larger model is far roomier. These are worn on the kilt belt, and are normally used by pipers to carry spare reeds, a spool of hemp, and other pieces/parts for their bagpipes.

Know exactly what you mean. I had used my sgian about 10 times in the space of 3 minutes. Chat, out, chat, cut, chat, in, chat. Too much chatting and not enough paying attention. On the last time, missed the sheath and sliced my leg. Lesson learned, now I pay attention.

I can imagine a transverse sheath (in line with the belt) would work. My memories of being a scout and wearing a sheath knife are that it would always stick in your gut every time you sat or bent down.

The straps on your (would be) kilt usually have 3-5 holes. Waist measures are targeted to the middle hole. So, if for some reason, you need to stock supplies at your waist you ought to be fine just using the looser holes.

I would not adjust the measurement when ordering.

Ken, I really like the piper pouch idea! I will order both. "Mr Fixit" here keeps getting called to fix something and I end up sticking the extra tools in my nice Rob Roy sporrans. One day I will put a hole in the soft leather with a screwdriver blade. I will keep the big piper pouch with my tool box in the truck.

If you are working while kilted, you might also find this water bottle holder handy. I use this thing constantly when I'm in the sun, or on a hike. You can see it (and the large pouch in the previous link), on my belt in this pic from last summer's games in Livonia (that's me, on the right.)
