Other versions of this sgian ?
A quick search here tells me many of you are familiar with the Colt sgian dubh . I found one & think it's great for a functional affordable good looking sgian (although the scabbard is like putting a brick in your hose) . I was wondering if anyone has seen this product with handles made of other materials or woods ?

BTW the leather lanyard that came with it makes a great cat toy .

Welcome to the forum. I did a couple of quick web searches and didn't find any by colt with different handle materials, but there were a few in similar patterns by different companies. I saw one (by a custom knife maker) with mother of pearl inlay, and a couple with impact resistant and rubberized handles. They didn't look bad, but they lacked the class that the simple polished wood gives. As a note, I would either make a different scabbard or have one made for me because that looks like it would slide down with the least bit of movement. Maybe some of the others will have better luck. I have one sgian that's been with me longer than kilts, just because it's a great knife, so I really don't shop for them much.

I have two sgians: One is purely decorative and pretty much useless as a knife. The other is "the Spike" by Cold Steel which I have found to be a very useful knife but comes only with a black wrapped handle but it is quite functional. It is for me basically a "kilted version" of the way I would use my Gerber pocket knife when trousered (less and less these days). I never used to carry a knife of any kind but here "on the farm" there are occasions when one really needs to cut something (hay strings usually). The Spike comes with a nice enough black molded scabbard which slips nicely into one's sock/hose and with a slight modification, easily allows the knife to be retrieved. Anyway.... just another thought/alternative?

I haven't seen other materials either for this one. However, you could look at replacing the handle and/or scabbard with a different material. Like Sir Didymous said, I'd probably shoot for replacing the scabbard first since there's no reason for it to have that much weight to it and it's easier to replace it than it would be the handle itself. You should be able to find a cheap leather one for $5-10.
Another option might be to attach a strap to the scabbard to give it extra staying power, though that may or may not work depending on the shape of your calves and where you wear it; the strap may simply slide down your leg regardless.

I have one and had a nice molded leather sheath made for it. Works nicely.

Any leather skills? It isn't difficult to make your own.
With it being cover by your hose, it doesnt need to look totally profesional, just functional.

I'm leaning toward making a sheath for it . I don't have leather working skills but you have to start someplace .

I started with pouches, but sheaths really aren't that hard.

I own this one as-well. I am quite impressed with the burl handle. I use it a lot as a utility knife also. I have seen a lighter and darker wood from time to time in this model. The sheath is beautiful but tends to slide due to smoothness. I'm thinking about making a simple leather sheath for use in kilt hose myself. Please do post a pic if you make one.
