Recent Addition To My Collection
It has been awhile since I posted on the site and in the interim I have been busy adding to my sword collection. Here are some photos of a recent acquisition, a 1700 - 1735 "S" Hilt. It is a broadsword with a massive blade, two inches wide at the hilt and 34.25 inches long. The basket is quite typical of swords of that era, with many piercings and filed decorations. The blade does sport the name "Andrea Ferara" which is a trademark used by many Solingen bladesmiths. There is also a motto which reads "PACERE SUBJECTIS" on one side of the blade and "DE BULARES SUPERBOS" on the other. My Latin is rusty to the point of being non-existent but I think it means something like "protect the downtrodden and bring down the strong." The original sword is pictured on page 87 of Harvey Withers' book on the Scottish sword. My sword is, of course, a copy, which was made by Donnie Shearer, The Mad Piper who took many of the photos for Mr. Withers' book but did not receive photo credit. Sorry, a photo of another blade, with a running wolf mark appeared in the post by accident. I will try to correct that.
