    57th Annual Colonial Highland Gathering

The 57th Annual Colonial Highland Gathering and Scottish Games was held this past Saturday (May 20) at the Fair Hill Race Track in Elkton, Maryland. Though it was overcast, the weather was beautiful and the temperature just right. This is a great event and has a lot of different competitions to enjoy including; Pipe, Drum, Pipe Band, Drum Major, Highland Dancing and Scottish Fiddle. As usual, I took a few photos at the event. Enjoy.

Simon Fraser fought as MacShimidh, a Highland chief… wrapped and belted in a plaid over the top of his linen shirt, like his ordinary kinsmen. He put a bonnet on his head, and stuck the Fraser emblem, a sprig of yew, in it. With the battle cry, A'Chaisteal Dhunaidh and the scream of the pipes, they charged to battle. The Colonial Highland Gathering attracts a lot of 'decendents of Scots' and kilt wearers. Of course I was kilted and I wore my XMTS Dandelion but I didn't spot any X Marks that I recognized and no one approached me. However, I did get a couple of shots of individuals and families in kilts.

The Colonial Highland Gathering features a lot of great competitions so, we moved around and enjoyed a little of this and a little of that. Here are a few photos of the ever popular 'Caber Toss'. Only a few of the tosses made it over and in one case a kilt came off. The winner was wearing a pink kilt with pink ribbons in the design.

    Thanks for posting those!

A couple years ago I made the considerable drive from Hurricane WV there to Fair Hill. I had always wanted to visit those games. They were wonderful Games in a unique setting.

(The thread at that time, it's your thread I believe)
