Greenville Scottish Games
Barely a month away, this year's games is already shaping up to be another not-to-be-missed event. Starting at 6PM on Friday, May 27th, with a parade down Main Street followed by a ceili kicking off at 8; Saturday, the 28th, offers the usual high standard of athletic events, more than 50 clan tents, historic reenactors, and a great assortment of quality vendors. This year, in addition to the more than 500 pipers and drummers in the massed bands, the Greenville Scottish Games are host to the Band of the United States Marine Corps, as well as an Honour Guard from the Royal Highland Fusiliers (just back from Afghanistan), and a fly-by of F-16s... as in past years the profits of the games go to charity, and this year the donations go to The Wounded Warrior Project and to The Erskine Hospital, in Scotland.
So mark your calendar for the best one-day games in America, and plan to come early and stay late!

Good on you, the Erskine Hospital is an excellent cause, and for those who haven't heard of it provides accommodation and facilities for disabled ex-servicemen. I have to appreciate the irony of a Scottish themed games held in USA actually making a profit and being in a position to donate money to a Scottish charity. Here in Scotland our games lose money and only survive thanks to public sector grants, charitable donations, fund raising lotteries and etc.

Alex, thanks for the kind words. In addition to the Macmillan Nurses, the clan and family have strong ties to the Erskine-- our late chief, Lt. General Sir Gordon Macmillan of Macmillan and Knapp, and his second son, Lt. General Sir John Macmillan of Laggalgarve, were governors of the Erskine, so it really was a "no brainer" on my part.
I can tell you that it isn't easy turning a profit on a Highland games; we've been successful due to the ceaseless efforts of Mrs. Dee Benedict (president of the games), her assistant, Beverly Griffin, and the hard work of the board of directors-- all unpaid volunteers!
Perhaps one of these years we can get you over here and show you how it's done-- --Southern style!

Well Scott, you and your team seem to have the magic touch there in turning a profit. I am secretary and treasurer of our local games here in Hawick and I fear this year's games on 19th June might be our last due to lack of funds and lack of volunteers.

The Greenville Scottish Games began after I left North Carolina, but I have heard nothing but good things about the event, from bands and other participants. If I don't make it down this year, I will definitely try for next.
