This tradition has spread from humble origins as a 1941 fundraiser for British war relief to the point where Kirkin’ services are now celebrated throughout the U.S. and Canada. The event begins with Members of the Society march into the Cathedral, led by the Saint Andrew's Society of Washington DC Color Guard and Pipes & Drums. Upon conclusion of the remarks by the Society Chaplain, the entire massed Pipes & Drums march to the High Altar with Society Members for the "Blessing of the Tartans." All attendees are invited to watch an open air performance of the Pipes, Drums, and Dancers of the Society on the south side of the Cathedral immediately after the service. The service is free of charge, although contributions to the offertory are welcome.
This is a wonderful event and everyone is welcome. The more society's represented, the better the event will be. This is the National Kirkin' at the National Cathedral.
