Anyone willing to share their pictures for a presentation on Scottish national dress?

Hi, guys. It's been a while since I've been here. I'm a Scot that moved to Japan last August and I have been asked if I would like to do a public presentation on Scottish National dress for the council of an area where one of my friends lives. So I'm preparing a computer slideshow to go with the presentation, and of course, it's a public event, so I can't just take pictures from Kinloch Anderson or Scotweb or somewhere since I don't have permission. I have pictures of myself, but I don't have nearly enough. What I would like to know is if any of the wonderful and generous members here at X Marks the Scot would be willing to allow me to use their photographs in my presentation. Of course, I'll give you credit at the end of the presentation. Pictures you have of all things highland dress related would be very much appreciated.

I am not sure what the protocol is of pictures published here on xmarksthescot being used for other purposes and baring that in mind, if you can find a picture of mine on this website that may be of use to you, then I give you consent to use it. Good luck.

You're welcome to any in my XMarks album that you might find useful. You might want to just put XMarks onto your projector and take them for a walk through some of what's here. Since it's Internet, my understanding is that it's public.

Heh, no, it's not. To the OP, IANAL but your presentation may very well fall under fair use. Might be worth a bit of research.

Bob, @ratspike help me out here - is nobody allowed to show a projection of Internet pages to a group of people? How would one ever supervise/ enforce/ manage that? Since the Internet is available to all of those people individually, isn't it available to them as a group?

Would the laws vary in different nations? Under those circumstances, would the laws of the U.S. apply because our site's hosted there, the laws of Canada apply because it's owned here, the laws of the nation where it's being shown apply, or the laws of the nation from which the OP made the posting?

Just interested in all of this because it's an area about which I know little or nothing. Perhaps our legal beagles will chime in - you may actually be one of those.

Fascinating area about which I'd love to learn a lot more, but my understanding has always been that once I upload it, I've lost control of it in the same way that when I broadcast something, it's private all the way to the tip of my antenna and after that, anyone can listen to it or see it. Canada's Supreme Court for one, made that decision back in the '80s as I recall.

    Thanks for chiming in!

You can use my photos. I have two that will give a different perspective on being kilted.

The utility kilt (with the chainsaw) is my "working or daily" choice. I believe many of our members have a particular or type of kilt they use, like I do mine.
My Confederate Memorial kilt (with the car) is a semi formal choice but can be converted with other clothes acceptable for a formal setting.

I hope your presentation is not too overwhelming to compile. There are many levels of how to present the kilt in modern times to folks unfamiliar with the National attire.

If you are not able to retrieve the photos here, let me know and we'll set up an email transfer. Just PM me.
There will be no need to credit me on these photos except to say that permission was given.

    Permission to use

You're welcome to use any which I have posted. They're fairly unremarkable (!), but if you think otherwise, feel free to use them.

So again, as IANAL I'm not an expert on copyright law and don't know the specifics of what would be considered fair use. I *think* that a slideshow for educational purposes would likely fall under fair use. I *think* that a slideshow as part of, say, a sales pitch would not. And no, because it's available on the internet that doesn't mean that someone has the legal right to use it for their own purposes.

Copyright law does vary from one country to the next. If, for example, I post a photo here, then where the site is hosted and where Steve lives don't matter. That photo is my intellectual property, I own the copyright, and I control it's use unless there's something in the TOS that I agreed to when I joined that transfers my copyright to someone else.

Yeah, sad but true, once something is uploaded to teh internets you really do lose a lot of control over it. That doesn't mean that you don't still retain copyright, only that lots of people don't understand or don't care, and happily use said internets as their own personal, free, stock service. I'm not familiar with Canadian copyright law because, again, IANAL, but I'd be a little surprised if it treats copyright that way.
