A few pictures of the battlefield of Culloden. I am sorry that I could not take more pictures as I started to feel a bit unwell and had to leave. I think and hope that this is not the time for recriminations, factual hair splitting,or any other quasi partisan historical comment and I would be obliged if those type of comments be kept for another thread at another time.

More to come.

May all those who died be remembered with honour, they gave their lives for what they believed in.
Thankyou for the photos

Indeed, and I think the last line on the plaque below says it all:

These pictures really require little comment. The graves, even after all these years are still a distinct "hump" in the ground and the grass is very green compared to the surrounding vegitation.

Two unmarked(darker green) mass graves.

Jock, the old road was built right through the graves and that's the reason for the two unmarked ones side-by-side on your left. They are actually a continuation of the two on the right of the present grassy strip, the old road bed. The longest of the graves is that of the Mackintosh/Clan Chattan/Macgillivray, broken in two by the road bed for some twenty-five feet of its full length.

Thank you for that Rex, I knew a road was there somewhere, but I did not know that. I am not at all sure I like the "new look" battlefield and some paths are now non existant.

My apologies to Clan Donald as I did not get to the "Donald Stones". The first of the following pictures is looking down the Government lines from the left flank. The Clan Donald stones are over the brow in the distance, just in front(if I remember correctly) of the British lines. The Scots attacked from the left of the picture.

This is where Major Wolfe(later General Wolfe) and his men stood on the left of the second Government line. On the far bank of the water was the front line. It was here that the Scots broke through the first line and were met by impossible terrain and government troops. At a guess about half of the Scots fell here and most of the British casualties were here too.

Not all Scots supported BPC.

At BPC's start line.

........and finally, its me and I am tired, but feeling fine.

Thank you sincerely for those moving pictures of the cairn and markers.
I had an ancestor who fought at the battle and survived, hiding out we believe in the Pennines and settled in Lancashire. As my direct ancestor, if he had perished, I wouldn't be here.
A very poignant group of pictures.
