Auntie Elsie’s Visit
One of my British aunt’s is touring the US and Canada. Yesterday, her group was visiting Washington, DC. My sister, Denise, cousin, Sherry and I converged on Old Town Alexandria where Auntie El’s group was staying.
Cousin Sherry had not visited Old Town in many years, so while El was freshening up, we went down to Old Town for a quick tour.

Here we are at Market Square. Our mothers’ had married US Air Men where in the UK for the Berlin airlift. As fate would have it my wife’s Berlin mother would marry her father a US Army man in Germany.

Honoring a XMarker’s Request
On my 2008 Alexandria Scottish Christmas Walk thread, Alan H had requested that a photo be made of the location site of the McKnights colonial tavern.

The tavern was located on the NW corner of King and Royal streets. It is now the location of a PNC Bank.

The tavern was a favorite of George Washington’s. It is not said if he slept there!

We headed to Daniel O’Connell Irish Pub for dinner. It was a bustling evening in Old Town.

Kilted in my Newsome Box pleat XMarks tartan, I was a crowd pleaser. Alexandria was founded and had a heavy inhabited Scots community in our colonial past.

It was a great to see little Elma again. She had been named after my mother’s sister, Elsie Margaret, whom had the nick name Elma. Although, Elsie here is my aunt, I am three days older than her. Right, my grandfather was an virile old codger that had started his second family.

Thanks for them pics. I do love old town Alexandria but ain't been there in 40 years...looks like its changed a lot. Imagine the seafood is still the best...
And I wear kilts to my family gatherings too. Think it makes them think about the family heritage although doesn't seem to be a need for your family. Seem most aware already.

I love visiting Old Town. DC and the surrounding remains one of my favorite places. There is such a liveliness there - you can see it in the way that restaurants spill out on to the sidewalks everywhere you go. Thanks for the quickie tour.

Rex.
