    Back to school

This is the second week that students are back to school and today is the first day of me wearing my kilt here at work (I teach at the High School). I am liking my brown vest and newer brown dress shoes with this, but I really need/want to get/make a brown leather sporran (maybe beaver or muskrat fur) to go with this color choice.

I think the outfit looks very smart. Take a look at the recent pic of our highland games. I'm on the left and Larry Dirr is on the right. We both made our sporrans out of Beaver.

Thanks and great photo! I currently have a number of beaver and muskrats at the tannery. The difficult thing is going to be deciding what exactly to make for a sporran and then executing it in a way that I am not embarrassed to wear it!

Looking good.... One of "Artificer's" custom hunting sporrans would be a great match.

I'm a great believer in wearing whatever you feel comfortable in given whatever the situation, but my purely personal opinion is that in the circumstances, the outfit is great from the knees up. My preference would be to tone down the hose so they don't shout louder than the kilt, perhaps grey or lovat to tone in with the jacket and match the shoe colour to the sporran. I know it is probably a quite different culture in the States, but I would not want to wear anything that resembled a dead animal in front of a class of children. Rabbit fur ok, but full beaver sporrans would definitely be out. I repeat that is purely my personal opinion and has no reference to what is right or wrong as I would never contemplate telling anyone that, unless of course the kilt, sporran or jacket were back to front.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

Thank you TPA. The hose are a bit loud (especially in this photo where the kilt colors are darkened and less vibrant). I am not very pleased with the older single-tone hose that I have and am hoping that my wife soon knits me up some better ones in grey or blue. As for fur, I live in a rural area of WI where leather, hide, and fur are common and acceptable. Most of my students and families hunt (as well as have everyday animal encounters farming) and we offer hunter education classes from our school. I understand your concern, however.

I guessed that might be the case Isaac, different culture, nothing wrong with that. Even real fur coats can be frowned on here, other places they can be a life or death necessity. Personally I am not keen on overly ostentatious sporrans, but that is not a preference that is universal shared even this side of the pond as many of the photos of past and present on this forum will attest to.

I say you look very well put together, I have to admit I am fond of how your hose look.
