    Balmoral Tartan at Balmoral. 1

We were at Balmoral yesterday and I spotted something that I thought some of you might be interested in. Normally pictures of exhibits are discouraged, but with permission I was kindly allowed to take a few pictures of this one exhibit. Sadly the pictures had to be taken through glass with rather substandared photo equipment and computer help was required.

Still can't get the pictures to stay. So Post 1 of 4.

    The Queen's Piper's uniform.

Very interesting. Wonders if this is still a current thing or just during the time of Victoria. It is a beautiful tartan.

Terrific photos, Jock. I wonder if this uniform has changed any over the many years the Crown has owned Balmoral.

I think the name of the Piper who's uniform it was was Ross, so perhaps someone might be able to date the uniform from that? I forgot to ask about the arm badge, but I did see a picture of the present day Queen's Piper and his uniform looked very similar, although I did note that the arm badge was missing and no pistol on his belt. As to the arm badge----a magnificent piece of work--- I am not sure if it is reserved for extra special events, or, it is now redundant.

Yes it is still current, Balmoral tartan is one of the very few tartans that it is almost impossible to get, and weavers will not produce it except by special arrangement

Oh I know the tartan is still current. I meant the Queens Piper ... is there still such a position and does he still get to wear the Balmoral Tartan.

Yes indeed. Did you not read what it says on picture four?
