Bitterroot Scottish Irish Festival, Montana, 8/24/13
Just got back from Hamilton, Montana, and the Bitterroot Scottish Irish Festival. I was entered in the solo piping and had an OK outing: 3rd in the 2/4 march and 4th in the piobaireachd. Here's me in the slow air comp:

Two minutes before I was up to play in that event, my bass drone reed fell into my bag and one of my tenor drones went out of tune. Kind of worked up a sweat trying to get everything back to right in a very short time, so I could play. After the solos ended, the massed bands played in the Great Glen in the grounds where the Festival took place. The Glen:

The entry of the bands:

Ran into some Jacobites:

Checked out the Heavy Athletics. One fellow was trying for a record in the sheaf toss--that's a pretty high bar!

Another heavy was trying to will his weight for height over the bar:

Posed with some of the other winners in different events in different grade levels. The young lad in front won four medals in Highland dance, but wouldn't put them on. 'They're too heavy,' he said. To have such problems!

The Bitterroot Mountains were much clearer this year. Not as much smoke from forest fires in the Valley this year:

A lot of the West is burning this year, though. This is the Lolo Fire, visible from Missoula, about 15 miles away:

A great event and a fun day. At the end, nothing to do but enjoy an IPA and some haggis!

Great pics. I hope Alan H. sees these pics. I would like to hear his comments on the height of that sheaf bar.

Beautiful pictures! Thanks for posting. Lovely country. I hope they got/get the Lolo fire under control.
My "favorite" picture is the Jacobites. Now wonder they lost at Culloden - too many layers.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Simon Fraser fought as MacShimidh, a Highland chief… wrapped and belted in a plaid over the top of his linen shirt, like his ordinary kinsmen. He put a bonnet on his head, and stuck the Fraser emblem, a sprig of yew, in it. With the battle cry, A'Chaisteal Dhunaidh and the scream of the pipes, they charged to battle. If I remember correctly, they said the bar was set at either 37 or 39 feet. Lot of height to toss a sheaf!
