Robert Amyot-MacKinnon
A fascinating man, a Breton, and a patriot. Of the execution of the innocent Duc d'Enghien, Napoleon apparently said "The grass will grow again on the battlefield, but under the scaffold, never." He realized his error too late. Visiting Brittany a few years ago to chase after the Tour de France (and ride some stages afterward) I found it largely ignored by Americans - who are missing a wonderful and unique corner of France. The Celtic connection between Brittany and their ancient cousins in Wales and Cornwall is real too. I found it odd that Breton pipers play the Great Highland Bagpipe, but Bretons have always done their own thing. As for Chateaubriand, like many French greats, he is available in translation.
