Colorado Kilting
Just back from a lovely trip to Ridgeway, Colorado to soak in Orvis Hot Springs and mellow out.
We rendevoused in Dolores, Colorado last Thursday night then drove in to Ridgeway. Stopped along the way for some hiking and pics along the Dolores River. Had on my "birthday outfit" again, the Orvis cable knit sweater my lady gave me to go with my Orvis RAF replica mechanic's vest. Kilt is Macdonald Lord of the Isles hunting. River is the Delores River.

Them be Z Coil hikers and Lewis Kilt Hose. Kathy Lare sewed the kilt.
Note the ice cycles on the rock in the pleat pic...it were cold.
Next day, after we pruned out at Orvis, the ladies wanted to explore Ouray. I used to live there when I worked in the old Idarado Mine up at Red Mountain Pass. So showed them around then wound up on the road out to the Camp Bird mine and then on the road to Yankee Boy Mine.

The mountains in the background are the ones I used to work deep inside of. Kilt is Scott Modern Red by Kathy Lare. Lewis Kilt hose and Z Coil hikers. That's Canyon Creek that runs down to the box canyon in Ouray.

Farther up the road, past the Camp Bird Mine, on a very narrow cliffside road to the Yankee Boy Mine. The pic doesn't show the sheer drop off just behind me. Probably only a couple thousand feet down to the creek.
It snowed deep last night and we had a great adventure chugging home over Lizard Head Pass in the heavy powder. Ski people are gonna be real happy now.

Ron great pictures....I have been busy getting things wrapped for my retirement so I haven't been posting but have quite a few things to post including a few new kilts and accessories. Those snow covered peaks sure look good, looks like a great time was had by all.

What a great place! You always find the best scenery. But I'm curious...why no sporran?

Ron can obviously bring more light on that question. But, I do know that he's not wearing one with the Lord of the Isles kilt because he's wearing a vest. He's quite the fan of the pockets and cargo room of a vest. So, he often forgoes the sporran when wearing one. Why he's not wearing one with the Scott and T-shirt? Ron?

Great pictures Ron, and awe enspiring scenery as always. Correct me if I am wrong but the lack of sporran could be on account that you were hiking so it would just get in the way, or did you just leave it at home?

Aye,
I prefer a vest to a sporran...suppose it gives me an excuse to buy both. We were out on the back roads in 4 wheel drive mode and a sporran is just a nuisance in my lap. It is REALLY hard to find vests with a lot of pockets, and when I do I love them. Also have a Filson cruiser jacket which is what they gave us to wear underground in the mines. It has a bazillion pockets and is a great jacket to wear with kilts - especially in mining country where the jacket sends the message - "old grizzled miner"...or well, that's the message I wanna send.
I took two sporrans on this four-day trip and never wore either one of them. In the tshirt and Scott pic (last one) I was high on a cliffside road. Had just found a small spot to turn around without crashing into the canyon below and was waiting for the ladies to finish their hike on up the road. So all my gear was a few feet away in the car.
Here's a pic from earlier in the day with the Filson Cruiser jacket worn as an alternative to a sporran. Jacket has a bazillion pockets inside and out, even a huge 'game' pocket across the back. Photo is at the bottom of Box Canyon Falls in Ouray, Colorado.

Ain't a new idea. Got it from Ham and love the comfort and convenience of using a jacket or vest in lieu of a sporran. No belt either - a comfort for a fat kiltie like me.
Here's a pic of our little gang of explorer's. The younger is my lady's daughter.

I also like the vest in lieu of a sporran at work since I'm sitting all the time and the sporran is just sort of "in the way." Much more comfie without a sporran. Try it if you ain't yet.
