    Edinburgh and Dumfries

Well, I am back in Scotland a mere 6 weeks (after 10 years in Ireland), and more than glad to be back. I live in what has been voted the best city in the UK (Edinburgh) and if that wasn't enough, as an X-marker I get free whiskey every time I go down to Dumfries to stay with Pour1Malt.

Here's a pic of Edinburgh this evening - freezing cold but absolutely beautiful: looking up towards the Castle with the statue of George IV in the foreground:

Then in Dumfries last weekend, Patrick (from Norway) and I were saying our farewells to Robertson (till January, anyway)

    Looking good.
I wonder though who voted Edinburgh best city - perhaps the Edinburgh natives.
Personally I find Glasgow a nicer city with much friendlier people.

That's a lovely shot of Castle St Niall !

I cannot claim to know Glasgow very well Alex, in fact it's been ages since I was last there, but I would have to argue that Edinburgh is architecturally superior. They have certainly messed up the traffic system and the parking though!

Nice to see Patrick in his HOE County Antrim - welcome to the club!

The Aberdonians will say that about Aberdeen and the Dundonians about Dundee

Seriously though Glasgow does have a lot going for it from photos I have seen and as I said it is some time since I was last there. But Edinburgh surely has topographical advantages of varying heights and the contrasts between old and new towns whereas Glasgow is flatter and its most famous architecture more Victorian.

Of course you will never convince a Glaswegian about that!

I bought a Scottish jokes book when I was in Dumfries and it has a section devoted to Edinburgh and Glasgow jokes.

    Here is a sample:

Q - What's the difference between Edinburgh and Glasgow?

A - In Edinburgh, breeding is very important - in Glasgow it's fun!

    And another:

A visitor to Edinburgh was walking down Princes St when a fierce dog appeared and attacked a small boy. Disregarding his own safety, the man grabbed the dog and throttled it to death.

A reporter from an Edinburgh paper arrived on the scene and shook ther hero by the hand. He informed him that the headline would read "Brave Local Hero Saves Child BY Killing Vicious Beast."

"But I'm not from Edinburgh..." the man protested.

"OK then how about "Kind Stranger in Edinburgh Saves Child By Killing Vicious Dog?"

"But I'm not that much of a stranger to Edinburgh - I'm from Glasgow."

That night the headline read "Glaswegian Slays Family Pet!"
