Edinburgh tram works
For everyone planning to be in Edinburgh this year I thought I would post a few pics of Princes Street as you will never have seen it before (or again, hopefully). The street is expected to be in this state until November this year at least, although with the delays so far who knows?
This is the foot of the Mound (which is also closed to traffic) -

Here is Princes Street looking west from the steps of the art gallery -

And looking east. By the way the white building with flags outside is Romanes & Paterson which looks to be re-opening after the fire -

Here is Hanover Street looking north from Princes Street -

and looking south -

Finally this is at the foot of Lothian Road -

Don't be too downhearted about the Gathering though, folks, as the Royal Mile is unaffected.

Hey Phil, great pictures.
I was just there for 3 days last week and while there were closures, it didn't really affect us as we were on foot. I certainly would not cancel plans due to the construction if I were planning the trip again.

Its very controversial just now Phil with TIE running heavily over budget but I believe this will be a tremendous asset to Auld Reekie when the work is completed. just look at Dublin - brilliant!

look how once looked with the trams on that website
they should have left the trams there to begin with ,
its a case of putting back what they shouldnt have touched in the first place i remember some roads here in coatbridge up to 25 years ago still had tramway tacks even though they lay unused the only place now in coatbridge that has them is the summlee heritage park that showcases the areas old ironwork foundrys and mine history
its as bad as when they took half the train lines in the uk away for the governments to spend billions putting them back

And which bright civil servant decided to authorize this project with hordes due to descend on Edinburgh shortly for the Gathering 2009?

What do you think, they can complete a project like that in 2 months?

Maybe if the olympics were coming. That always brings out the "last minute crunch" in cities.

Traffic was horrendous before especially as Princes St was only open to buses and taxis (apart from certain sections such as between the Mound and Hanover St) and other vehicles had to take other routes.
I wonder where all those buses are now being routed! I should imagine that George and Queen Streets are having to carry a lot of it!
