Federal Memorial Tartan - Opposite of the Confederate Memorial Tartan

Rocky ran a special order of this back in June. Jumped on the bandwagon to honor my two great great grandfather's who fought for the Union. One as a "Squirrel Hunter" defending against John Hunt Morgan's raid through Ohio...and later he defended Washington D.C. against Early's raid. The other fought in the Tennessee campaigns. Both saw the elephant frequently.

The tartan is even more beautiful in person and out in the sun. Designed well by Dr. Smith. Rocky had the special run made at House of Edgar - 16 ounce. Kathy Lare sewed it up for me - kilt number 3695 for her.

I'm very pleased with the quality of the fabric, Kathy's craftsmanship, and that Rocky made the effort to get a few Federal Memorial tartans out there to offset the barrage of Confederate Memorial tartans.

And, this is kilt #78 for this gutter kilt junkie....

I really enjoy your sense of family heritage, choice of kiltmaker, and photographic skills.

    Good for you!!

    Pleating

Nice tartan and kilt Ron! I am a bit curious about the pleating though, it looks to be a sett and a half or ....? What am I looking at there?

Very nice looking...You wear it well.
I think that may be my next tartan in honor of may ancestor who also fought for the Union.

The light hit my new Federal Memorial pleats just right this morning and I saw the pattern Brooke is talking about.

This pic shows it best - but not well. Look at the wide red stripes.

Its a combination of to the sett, to the stripe, then to the sett again going from left to right with the to the stripe down the center back.

Don't know if there's a name for this style, but once I saw it its beautiful. No word back from Kathy yet - she's not much on email, usually busy sewing.

That's really interesting....the pattern going vertically is different from the pattern going horizontally!

    Beautiful, though!

Looks to me like it is to the sett, with the double yellow line omitted from the center-back. The pleats are symmetrical, and the overall effect is quite attractive (the kilt, not your derriere ).
I am sure that the kilt maker had a very good reason for pleating it this way. You could perhaps ask her?
