    First kilt pic

    Greetings, All!

Thank you all for the warm welcome in the Kilt Board Newbie forum (Greetings from Georgia). Here is a quick pic of my first ever kilt.

I bought two kilts from Atlanta Kilts: a black utility style and a wool US Army tartan. This is me in the utility with stuff I had on hand at home. I am a "suit" at work, so I had black dress shoes. I am also an Officer, so I had a wide belt. Add a dress shirt and some over the calf socks, and here we are. Looking at it, I seem to be wearing it a touch low. Must work on that....

Looks like a pretty good start.

The 'touch low' could be the camera angle, but you would be the better judge of that. From the picture, it looks like you have your belt just above your hip bone. The upper right-hand strap should probably be on your hip bone rather than below it. The kilt should probably cover your navel instead of resting on your hips. I haven't worn a utility kilt to know how they fit.

The sporran looks a little bit high (there should be a little bit of space between the cantle of the sporran and your belt buckle). Some folks say a hand's-breadth or a little less.

For a first go at kilt wearing, that is pretty damn good. Well done. Yes raising the kilt to about top of the knee cap would be better, but as you say, "you are working on that".

Some might suggest that a leather sporran strap might be kinder on the kilt, something to consider overtime, perhaps. Just something to remember and this is not showing in the picture I hasten to add, is that the back of the kilt needs to be at the same height as the front. Obvious, eh? Well, the kilt can sometimes just be a tad lower, but more often it is higher, at the back. It is an aspect that is often ignored, so a quick check in the mirror, shop window and training your good lady to "watch your rear" is helpful at times, particularly so, after getting out of the car.

    Looks great, Clay.

Seeing that all black makes me think I might like to see myself in one.

You fit the kilted crew to a "T". A gentleman wears his clothes, not the other way 'round, and you look comfortable. Everything from here on will be under your command. With the help of the rest we all find both traditional and modern ways to wear the kilt.

Thanks for involving us in this moment and welcome to the grand collection of independent thinkers and dressers. Ryc
