First time wearing my new SLANJ bespoke kilt.

    Hello XMTS members.

In April the wife and I took a trip to Scotland with some friends. It was my main goal to get fitted for a kilt while I was there. After a ton of research (trolled on XMTS a bit as well), I finally decided that SLANJ in Edinburgh was the place for me to open my wallet and take the plunge.

SLANJ treated me and my wife and friends like gold while we were there. Absolute attention to every detail was paid.

Three months later and it has finally arrived. I've had it for almost 2 weeks. I've put it away in a proper storage bag with cedar and proper hangers, but I've really only gawked at it, I tried the kilt on but never the full garb...

Well, tonight was the night. Home alone and a tad bored I thought i would get all gussied up!

    1) Having never done this before, I welcome comments on form, adjustments, heights, etc. I want to be sure I am 100% prim and proper when I don this beauty!

    2) I have Cream and Black hose. I did the cream becuase I think they look a little more formal (are Black hose more formal?).

    3) Not a big fan of selfies, i set the iPhone to timer and propped it up against a book, so pardon the poor composition.

    4) Is my kilt pin in a poor location? I feel it should be lower, but I thought it looked good on the red background.

    5) I know i need to remove the white "X" threads that held the coat tails in place. I'll do that when I wear ti out for the first time.

    6) Is the sporran too low? It kinda feels like it. I need to shorten the chain because i was on the last hole on the leather strap...

Please comment but be gentle - it's my first time!

The wife (mine of course) read your questions. She was giving me "sass" while I explained and justified my opinions. She wants me to be positive and confident if I'm going out in my kilt. She expects me to be accosted everywhere and wants me to be able to defend myself by being correctly attired. She "of little faith", doesn't trust my wit to keep a fist from my smart mouth.

We agree that the look you have in the photos is fine. If the sporran feels low, walk around, sit, adjust it until it feels natural. She asked, "where is his sgian"? "He's wearing it low in his hose," I answered. Her answer, "You wear yours too high then." Sass; I can expect it.

My usual utter miscomprehension of acronyms (in which I think I'm not alone, merely one of few who will speak about it) kicks in here:

What on earth is SLANJ and why would I know the answer to that question?

With enough, is that possible, kilts in my closet I do find the tartan plus fours having quite a pull on my pocket book. They are in the golf section of Slanj.

Very smart and everything, including the sporran, appear to be at the right height. An excellent first-time turnout! However, the jacket sleeves look a bit too long. You should be able to show some shirt cuff below them.

Both cream and black hose are favoured by kilt hire shops but most regular wearers of the kilt will use coloured hose.

Have to agree that coloured hose would be much nicer than cream or black. Lots of threads out there on colour choices to fit your needs. Also a nice pair of wingtips, black or brown, would fit the bill and be more comfortable. Otherwise it is a very nice looking kilt and you wear it well......

Ditch those boring cream hoses, and get yourself colored hoses especially the mustard ones.

You already look great.. With a couple of minor adjustments you'd look like if you've been kilted for years.
