LA Anime Expo 2011
Took my daughter to LA Anime Expo yesterday for her 17th birthday.
She's a chip of the ol' block: she draws all the time (I'm an artist by trade) and she's REALLY into anime and manga, the Japanese style of drawing.
A big thing with anime fans is "cosplay", dressing up as characters from anime, manga, electronic gaming, etc. I know next to nothing about all this, but enough to know that I should dress my finest, so I wore quasi Edwardian dress.
Here we arrive, sukoturandoji and my daughter dressed as Sanji (a character from the classic anime One Piece).

Here she is as Sanji, with a guy dressed as Lufie, both from One Piece. (Sanji is a male character; in "cosplay" it's common for girls to dress as male characters.)

Here I am posed with... well I don't know what it is. Cool-looking for sure. It was the first time out for the castellated "triced" hose I recently got from Skye Highland Outfitters:

Here is... well once again I'm at a loss but I'll call her Devil Girl:

Not surprisingly, a large proportion of the people attending Anime Expo are nihonji. Here is a group of them, all posed and dressed as... I don't know what.

And there are plenty of gaijin too!

Richard. I'll bet that was a crackin' day out. Dad with kids time is ever so important I think. Even if you haven't got a clue what's going on.
Cheers!

You both look like you were having a lot of fun! The other guy in this photo is Master Chief from the video game Halo.

Master Chief from Halo, eh? Well I learned something today!
His (her?) costume was fantastic. Looking close, you could see that it was hand fabricated out of sheet plastic etc. Hours and hours of work, and much cleverness, went into it.
About the shoe buckles, they're just ordinary Scottish shoe buckles, the sort which have always been available from Highland Dress shops. They've always come in "#355 pattern", Celtic, and plain. The #355 is a thistle design long available in plaid brooch, crossbelt hardware, waistbelt buckle, dirk, sgian, and horsehair sporran top: en suite as our friend Iain Sherwood would say. I got them cheap off Ebay.
I have two pairs of shoes like that, ordinary modern "tassel loafers" which have had their tassels removed and buckles added. I wear them in imitation of the shoes long worn with Highland Dress, loafers with nonfunctional buckles, called "Cromwell style brogues" in Highland Dress catalogues from the 1930s.
Here's the other pair:

Looks like a good time. I'm contemplating going to the GlassCityCon next weekend. Some costumes for cosplay are much simpler and/or less time consuming. I anticipate a total time on mine will be about an hour and a half, most of that doing things to my hair that I've never done before.

I have got to show that picture of you with Master Chief to my little brother! He's a Halo nut and it will only make him want to wear his kilt even more once he sees just how dandied up one can get in a kilt.
