Mummers Parade
Yesterday was the delayed Philadelphia Mummers Parade. Colorful fun was had by all. If you are unfamiliar the parade is a Philadelphia tradition. It is usually held on New Years day but due to rain and wind it was postponed until yesterday. (Little weird having people saying Happy New Year on the 6th of January.) The big draw are the string bands and the song "Golden Slippers." We only hung out for about two hours and only saw the comics below are a few pictures.
Elvi's Dancing to Jailhouse Rock.

Purple Irish guys wearing very traditional Mummers comic outfits Please note the "golden slippers" they are wearing. Spray painted shoes.

Liderhosen guy pulling a cuckoo clock containing a child

Strutting dancers these guys were great and had the best drummers accompanying them.

And some beach themed comics remembering the summer in Wildwood NJ.

Looks like great fun.
I guess you would look very conservative and invisible wearing a kilt in such colourfully clad company.

Reminds me of some of the "Doo-Dah" parades I've seen...and, okay, been in. Lawn Chair Drill Teams etc.
Fun fun fun!

Very colourful - the crazy and 'camp' things you get up to over there!! One point though: I cannot help wondering why all the Elvises and the Irish guys are wearing frocks and tights - perhaps I should know better than to even think about asking!!!!

It looks like a fun day, it also looks like you had good weather for it this time. I have not been to Philadelphia in a couple of years, but it is a very interesting city indeed, thanks for posting these as I had never heard of this parade.

Hamish:
I don't know the origins of the outfit but it is the traditional garb of the comics. I have seen pictures of the parade from the 1920's and the guys pretty much the same. Here is the wikipedia link that explains more of the history and also has pictures of the more elaborate string band costumes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mummers_parade

Looks Really cool. The only parades that I've been in, I was in a Confederate Uniform, An R.O.T.C. uniform, or band uniform. {ages ago it seems.}
